Western Digital's fiscal first-quarter report pairs rapid revenue growth with a much stronger cash result. The question for this Stock of the Day is whether the operating evidence and the completed chart now support the expectations in WDC shares. The October 23 market observation below is separate from the October 22 daily candle and can change during the session.
Growth reached the operating line
For the quarter ended October 2, 2026, WD reported $4.381 billion in revenue, up 55% from a year earlier. GAAP operating income was $2.046 billion, a 46.7% margin, versus $792 million and 28.1% a year earlier. GAAP diluted EPS was $4.63; the separately reconciled non-GAAP EPS was $4.64. Those measures should not be treated as interchangeable even when the latest difference is small.
The company links its outlook to storage demand and pricing. That is management's explanation, not proof that every future quarter will repeat this margin. Concentration in cloud customers, qualification cycles and investment needs remain relevant tests. A stronger business quarter does not establish a stock-price target.
Cash after the investment bill
The quarter generated $1.604 billion of operating cash. WD reported $227 million in net property, plant and equipment purchases, leaving company-defined free cash flow of $1.377 billion. It is useful to see that number beside GAAP operating income: revenue growth converted into cash after this defined capital spending. Free cash flow is still before dividends, share repurchases and debt repayments, and working capital can change the next period.
Guidance sets the next test
For fiscal Q2, WD guided to revenue of $5.1 billion plus or minus $100 million, or $5.0 billion to $5.2 billion. Non-GAAP diluted EPS guidance is $5.80 plus or minus $0.20. This is an expectation, not earned revenue or a GAAP earnings forecast; the issuer says it cannot reasonably reconcile certain forward guidance to GAAP. The next test is whether exabyte demand, selling prices, deliveries and collections support that range without sacrificing cash conversion.
The chart has its own confirmation rule
WDC closed October 22 at $354.19, before the results. A separate corroborated October 23 regular-session observation was $344.89, down 2.63% from that completed close. It was below Thursday's $348.23 intraday low, which now needs a reclaim, and below the completed 20-, 50- and 200-day averages of $400.70, $435.87 and $413.93. Thursday's $367.34 intraday high remains a dated overhead reference. None of these changing October 23 prices has been inserted into the completed October 22 candle or moving averages.
The short-term chart remains weak even as the reported operating quarter improved. Thursday's low and the completed averages describe different horizons; the broader trading range should be shown separately rather than inferred from one reaction. The broken Thursday low now needs a reclaim; a daily retest and close above it would be the first step toward repair. The 200-day average is a later, higher test rather than near-term support.
A daily reclaim requires a daily retest and close above the relevant reference. A momentary cross of an old level is not confirmation, and a later close back below it would weaken the repair case. WD has delivered an unusually strong operating and cash quarter; the stock still has to demonstrate that the market will sustain its revised expectations.
