After CPI, into the regular session
This is a dated October 14 market update. Prices were observed at 10:12:38–10:12:40 a.m. ET and compared with October 13 regular-session closes. The charts are a retained walkthrough, not a continuously live feed.
Good morning, everyone. CPI is out, the market is open, and the selling has picked up. Headline inflation rose six-tenths of a percent in September, with gasoline accounting for more than half of that increase. Core rose three-tenths, the same monthly pace as August. Let's look at where we closed last night and where we're trading now.
SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY)
SPY closed near seven hundred and seventy-eight and is around seven hundred and seventy-three, down about seven-tenths of a percent. It tried to recover yesterday's low around seven hundred and seventy-six after the open, but couldn't hold it. Below us, the October eighth low and twenty-day average sit around seven hundred and seventy. There's also that open daily gap from October second around seven hundred and sixty-six to seven hundred and sixty-seven. These are areas to watch for a reaction, not guaranteed floors. Seven hundred and seventy-five to seven hundred and seventy-six is now the first area I'd want reclaimed.
Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)
The Qs closed near seven hundred and forty-four and are around seven hundred and thirty-six, down just over one percent. Tech is holding up worse than SPY. We've dipped below the October first low around seven hundred and thirty-six. The September twenty-eighth low around seven hundred and thirty-two is the next dated level below. Further down, the September twenty-first daily gap runs from roughly seven hundred and twenty-two to seven hundred and twenty-eight. Back above us, yesterday's low around seven hundred and thirty-nine and the twenty-day average around seven hundred and forty-one are reclaim levels.
CoreWeave (CRWV)
CoreWeave closed near seventy-eight and is around sixty-six, down about fifteen and a half percent. It was already weak before CPI, and the selling has accelerated after the open. The August low around seventy has been lost, so that's a reclaim now. The July twenty-eighth low around sixty-five is close below us, then the July twenty-ninth low around sixty-one. It's below all three daily averages. Financing costs matter for a business funding a big buildout. But the chart alone does not prove debt caused today's selling.
GlobalFoundries (GFS)
GlobalFoundries is going the other way. It closed near forty-seven and is around forty-nine, up about five percent. This morning it was selected to operate two new New York fabs under a Japan-funded initiative of up to twenty-one billion dollars. That's project funding, not immediate company revenue. The stock opened around forty-eight and moved higher. The twenty- and fifty-day averages are both around forty-eight, close to this morning's low. I'd watch whether that area holds on a pullback. The October eighth high around fifty-one to fifty-two is above us.
SoFi Technologies (SOFI)
SoFi closed just above fifteen and is around fourteen, down about six percent. It's now below both the March and July lows intraday. That changes the setup: fifteen is a reclaim level, not support we can assume will hold. The broader range we've followed since late March was roughly fifteen to twenty. A daily close below the lower end, followed by a failed reclaim, would weaken that range. For a successful retest, I still want a daily candle to test the level and close back above it.
ASML: the rebound after the open
Two earnings charts to finish. ASML closed near one thousand seven hundred and eighteen and is around one thousand seven hundred and thirteen. It fell to around one thousand six hundred and seventy-seven after the open, then rebounded above yesterday's close before pulling back. It reported about twelve billion euros in sales and guided next quarter to roughly fourteen to fifteen billion. Watch whether it can recover yesterday's close again and hold it.
Bank of America: the May low
Bank of America closed near fifty-four and is around forty-nine, down about eight percent. It's testing the May low around forty-nine. Reported earnings were ninety-one cents a share, or one dollar and eight cents excluding the settlement charge. Those are different measures. The stock is lower despite growth in net interest income.
Sources and chart basis
Daily candles and 20-, 50- and 200-day averages use completed regular sessions through October 13. October 14 prices remain separate observations. Intraday plots contain returned one-minute bars from 04:00, including earlier extended hours; the 09:30 marker separates the regular session. Session highs and lows use only bars from 09:30 onward. Returns compare the observed price with the prior regular close and exclude dividends. Historical gaps are measured from regular-session full daily candles through October 13; no gap is assumed to fill.
